Ok, so just had a major brainstorming moment so thought it would be best to post it on here before I forget!
As I was reading over Zoey's post and then also trying to think of what audience research we could take out, ideas for our narrative started to develop...
While I was thinking of things to go on my fear list, the idea of being stalked or followed stayed in my head.
Being stalked or followed is a classic convention of the thriller genre, and the way it can be portrayed can cause great tension for the audience, as they are being concealed off from the stalker as well.
Below are a few ideas I’ve literally just come up with so apologies Nixy and Zoey for not consulting you first but I suppose you can hear them on here!
- All 3 of us liked the idea of the main character recording his/her actions within a diary. Using this as our basis we would show scenes of him/her writing in the diary, then cross cut to other scenes which are being written about within the diary, possible recent stalking or updates on a particular character he/she has been following for example. This idea needs to be explored a lot further!
- revealing characters within mirrors as a reflection we thought would be an unexpected way of tracking the main character progress, as we are never fully seeing them in the shot - it could either always be an extreme close up shot when the are writing in the diary or reflections and silhouettes when they are following another character
- There’s a very specific scene within Shaun of the dead that stuck in my mind as I watched it over the weekend. There is a scene in which you see a blurred reflection of a zombie outside about to digest a live pigeon! When a bus drives past in front of the shot, as the bus passes it reveals that the zombie has vanished. It is quite a quick shot. This convention I think is really effective as it is unexpected and mysterious. I like the idea of having a variety of these type of shots within our film as it shall provide the main character with o pportunities for hiding from the camera - concealing off the audience
- I liked the use of shadow and silhouettes within this shot to create audience concealement
The mirrors within Shaun of the dead were used as elements of surprise to reveal characters. I think we may have to use this idea as it is pretty cool!
These ideas are a bit rushed and un-polished but it would be helpful to hear any extended ideas
